Thesis

Catherine IngrassiaThesis for the Doctorat d'Histoire de l'Art de l'Université de Paris I ,1990, Under the direction of Léon Pressouyre, 738 pages.

The first book to offer a synthesis of the history of dance from the 9th to the 15th century. Five major themes provide a chronological and synthetic overview of dance practices in the Middle Ages. Church dances, jugglers, courtly dances, late medieval dances, basses danses, moresques and danses macabres are studied through medieval iconography, then placed in their historical and literary context. For each theme, a typology is proposed, showing the great diversity of medieval dances.
