Dance, madness and death
The late Middle Ages linked dance to two concepts: madness and death. If the dead dance on the walls of cemeteries, drawing the living from all walks of life into their Danse Macabre, it is three allegories - Love, Fortune and Death - that keep men dancing throughout their lives in the Dance aux Aveugles. Dance and madness are also closely linked, and the "danse folle" was the form of dance most opposed by the Church throughout the Middle Ages.
