DANCE ICONOGRAPHY IN THE MIDDLE Ages (9th-12th centuries)

Mémoire de Maîtrise d'Histoire de l'Art, under the supervision of Léon Pressouyre, Université de Paris I, 1982 - 83.

Mastery

This Master's thesis in art history presents a catalog of the various themes of secular and religious dance iconography from the 9th to the 12th centuries. A study of the representation of dance movement in these images precedes a study of the use of musical instruments in Romanesque representations of dance. The dissertation concludes with the observation that dance images from this period can be divided into two categories: licentious and licentious dance images.
